Decades of selective breeding have also made it one of the most genetically diverse snakes in the reptile hobby, with an extraordinary variety of established color and pattern morphs.

Natural History

Corn Snakes are medium-sized, nonvenomous colubrids native to the southeastern and south-central United States. They occupy a wide variety of habitats, including pine forests, hardwood woodlands, fields, agricultural areas, and the edges of developed landscapes. Their adaptability has allowed them to thrive anywhere suitable shelter and prey are available.

In the wild, Corn Snakes feed primarily on rodents, although birds and other small vertebrates may also be taken. They are capable climbers but spend much of their time moving along the ground or sheltering beneath logs, rocks, vegetation, and other cover. Their natural reddish-orange coloration, dark-bordered dorsal blotches, and distinctive black-and-white checkered belly provide both camouflage and one of the most recognizable appearances among North American snakes.

Corn Snakes are generally secretive and avoid confrontation. Their manageable adult size, calm disposition, and adaptability would later become many of the same characteristics that helped make them so successful in captivity.

Corn Snakes have been maintained and bred in captivity for decades and have become one of the most established species in the reptile hobby. Their relatively straightforward husbandry, dependable feeding response, moderate adult size, and generally tractable temperament make them approachable for new keepers while still offering enough diversity to remain interesting to experienced hobbyists and breeders.

Successful captive breeding over many generations has also produced animals that are extremely well established in captivity. Today, Corn Snakes are bred throughout the world and are frequently recommended as a first snake, but their popularity extends far beyond beginner keeping. Dedicated breeders continue to develop new combinations, refine existing lines, and explore the enormous genetic diversity found within the species.

Few snakes have had as much influence on modern reptile keeping. Corn Snakes helped demonstrate how consistent captive breeding, careful record keeping, and an understanding of inheritance could transform a naturally variable species into a diverse and sustainable captive population.

From Wild Type to Morph Diversity

The naturally occurring Corn Snake, often referred to in the hobby as a wild type or normal, typically displays reddish-orange coloration with darker red or brown dorsal blotches outlined in black. Selective captive breeding and the discovery of naturally occurring genetic mutations dramatically expanded that appearance.

Over time, breeders established numerous inherited color and pattern traits affecting pigmentation, contrast, pattern placement, and overall appearance. Those individual traits can also be combined, creating an extraordinary number of possible visual outcomes.

Because Corn Snake genetics have become so extensive, this page is not intended to serve as a complete catalog of every known morph. Instead, The Wild Backyard focuses on the genetics and breeding projects that are currently represented within our own collection, along with the direction we are taking those projects in future breeding seasons.

SPECIES OVERVIEW

TWB CORN SNAKE PROGRAM

OUR FOCUS

The Corn Snake program at The Wild Backyard is focused on producing visually distinctive, well-established animals through carefully selected color and pattern combinations. Rather than trying to work with every available morph, we concentrate on a smaller group of genetics that complement one another and allow us to develop consistent long-term projects. Our current emphasis includes Red Factor, Caramel and Butter-related projects, Tessera and Stripe pattern genetics, along with selected Cinder and Sunkissed combinations.

RED FACTOR PROJECTS

Red Factor is an important part of our Corn Snake program because it is more than simply a selectively bred increase in red coloration. Red Factor is an incomplete-dominant genetic trait, meaning a snake carrying one copy can visibly express increased red coloration, while animals carrying two copies generally show an even stronger expression.

The effect often appears as an increasing wash of red across the head and body, with coloration becoming more pronounced as the animal matures. Red Factor can also influence areas that normally retain lighter coloration, including portions of the belly pattern.

CARAMEL & BUTTER PROJECTS

Caramel is a recessive color mutation and is one of the foundation genes in our yellow-focused projects. Butter is the combination of two recessive traits, Caramel and Amelanistic, producing snakes dominated by yellow, cream, and orange coloration. Our goal is to continue refining these colors while incorporating complementary pattern and color-enhancing traits.

TESSERA, STRIPE, AND PATTERN PROJECTS

Tessera is a dominant pattern mutation that replaces the traditional saddle pattern with a strong dorsal stripe and altered side pattern. Stripe and Motley are separate but related recessive pattern mutations, and both can dramatically change the organization of the normal corn snake pattern. At TWB, we use Tessera, Stripe, and Motley to create cleaner, more distinctive pattern combinations while pairing them with color projects such as Red Factor, Caramel, Amel, and Cinder. Because these pattern traits can interact in different ways, they are an important part of how we plan future pairings.

CINDER & SUNKISSED PROJECTS

Cinder and Sunkissed are both recessive mutations that we use more selectively within the Corn Snake program. Sunkissed reduces dark pigmentation while also altering pattern, producing brighter orange coloration and distinctive pattern changes. These genetics give us additional options for developing projects such as Peppermint and other combinations while keeping the overall program focused.

This makes Red Factor particularly useful in combination projects. Rather than creating an entirely new pattern, it can enhance the coloration already produced by other genetics. At The Wild Backyard, we are especially interested in its influence on Amelanistic, Snow, Caramel/Butter, and selected pattern projects, where increased red or pink coloration can significantly change the overall appearance of the animal.

Red enhancement is not always Red Factor. Other mutations and selectively bred lines can also produce stronger red coloration, so animals should only be identified as Red Factor when their genetics or breeding history support that designation.

2026 HATCHLING UPDATE - AUGUST

The 2026 Corn Snake season is well underway at The Wild Backyard. We have already had four successful clutches hatch, with two additional clutches still developing in the incubator.

Our hatchlings are not listed for sale immediately after hatching. Before becoming available, each baby must be well established with a minimum of three successful meals and two sheds. This gives us time to evaluate each animal and ensures they are feeding consistently and ready for their next home.

This year’s clutches have produced a wide variety of colors, patterns, and genetic combinations, with new hatchlings expected to become available over the next several days and weeks. A selection of this season’s babies is pictured below.
